  • Dancers Why Unionize?

    DANCERS INFROMATION

Question:  If I am a dancer why would I want to Unionize?

Answer:  To change your work place status from self-employed to employees.

An example chart of the difference is displayed below:

    Self-Employed Status Employee Status
Social Security Have to pay into your own Are shared between Employee and Employer
Taxes You, are responsible for your own and must pay taxes on your income Employer files for you, you receive a tax return
Tax Deductibles   More Deductions Less Deductions
Unemployment Benefits You do not qualify You qualify
Minimum wage Work for your tips only Paycheck, Plus your tips
Will have to pay stage fees Yes, if club requires it No, it will now become illegal for your club to collect fees.
Retirement  No, you're on your own Yes, Union can help set up retirement accounts
More say in work place No, you get none Yes, you have more rights
Work your own hours You work the hours you want to work

    You work a scheduled shift

As you're probably aware, exotic dancers across the country have been filing class-action lawsuits against their "employers," for illegally calling them "independent contractors" and denying them the rights and benefits (like wages, workers' compensation insurance and the right to organize) they should be entitled to as employees.

AND THEY ARE WINNING MILLIONS OF DOLLARS!

Question:  So What do I do if I want to start Unionizing the club I work with?

Answer:  Start with these basic steps:

    1. Talk to the other people inside your club and see what they think, and put together a list of names and phone numbers, so that you set up system to communicate with each other.

    2.  Keep it quite from management!!

    3.  You will need Union Check Cards and will need at least a majority of the dancers inside your club to sign, The IEAU will supply this check cards for you.

    4.  Click on the link to your left that says ORGANIZE TODAY and someone from the IEAU will contact further instructions.

**We also suggest you read "Confessions of a Union-Buster" by Martin J. Levitt so you are prepared for what is coming ahead and what managment might try.

Also, you are protected, by law, when you organize to bring a union to your workplace!  You cannot legally be fired for trying to form a union. And forget what you've been taught about 'nasty unions'!  Unions are the voice of workers and they add a dose of democracy to your workplace. In a union you and your co-workers agree to wages, benefits (like sick days and health insurance) and more.

Sound easy enough? Dancers from strip joints all over the country have been calling our union, and getting ready to join together nationwide to start a new movement like never before.  Join the IEAU now, and be part of changing history and joining the #BeTheChange campaign!
